Cities might replace or supplement public transportation with their own fleet of self-driving cars. While being a threat to cab drivers, self-driving cars offer business opportunities for cab companies that can dispatch cars to you programmed with your pickup spot and destination.
Once we have easy access to transportation when we need it, the desire to own our own cars will be greatly diminished.
I think the transition to self-driving cars will happen faster than some estimate - more in the 5-10 year range than 20 years.Martin Rayalahttp://www.design-labschools.orgnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5728814948530385321.post-71209663535777082772012-09-24T05:03:23.656-06:002012-09-24T05:03:23.656-06:00I think you may be wrong on parking and real estat...I think you may be wrong on parking and real estate prices. With self-driving cars, it's far easier to have long commutes and to live far from your workplace. There will be less incentive to live in many high-rent areas.

A parking spot isn't even needed for a self-driving car, your car can find parking far away and come back to you when you need it.Andrew Snoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5728814948530385321.post-71393922234265346102011-08-12T14:20:20.934-06:002011-08-12T14:20:20.934-06:00Presumably, self-driving cars will operate in a me...Presumably, self-driving cars will operate in a mesh network, with detected road conditions, hazards, etc. communicated to following vehicles.

There will be a tipping point, at which the benefits of self-driving cars will preclude human-driven cars from certain roads. Note that completely automated and meshed cars will need no traffic signals and will interleave smoothly at intersections.Stephen Reedhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06365694056411738218noreply@blogger.com
